Passive designed houses have been built in Europe for over 30 years.
The first residential Passive house was built in Darmstadt in 1990. In 1996 the Passivhaus-Institut was formed to promote and control the standards of the passive houses built.
By 2010 there was estimated to be 25000 passive houses through-out in Germany and Austria. This inspired SM Building to increase the interest in Passive houses in Tasmania.
